American slang*L’argot américain : c’est trop cool ! 

Comme les jeunes français, les américains utilisent sans s’en rendre compte une multitude de mots d’argot, que l’on n’apprend généralement pas en cours d’anglais en collège ou lycée. Découvrez ici quelques expressions typiquement américaines, que vous entendrez probablement au cours de vos discussions.

  • Got you / Gotcha = je t'ai compris. Lorsque l'on a compris une explication compliquée, on répond "gotcha !". S’utilise aussi, après avoir fait une blague, pour dire “je t’ai eu !”.
  • "Hella" = superlatif, contraction de l’expression “hell of a lot”. Même usage que notre "trop" en français (vous savez les "trop cool", "trop beau", "trop nul",…). Ex: "that's hella dough !" (cool) / “that's hella deep” (c’est trop classe) / I’m hella happy (je suis trop content) / i’m hella good (je me sens trop bien) / he’s hella handsome (il est trop beau) / this skirt is hella tight (cette jupe est trop stylée),...
  • "Nasty" = "Neat" = "Rad" = super cool !
  • "Whatcha gonna do Friday night ?" = "What are you going to do Friday night ?" - Les américains utilisent beaucoup les contractions de mots. Dans le même registre : "Gimme the bread" pour "Give me the bread" ou encore "Wassup ?" voire "S'up ?"pour “what's up?" (Quoi de neuf ?)
  • "Right back at ya" = à toi aussi. Ex: - Have a good day! - Right back at ya!
  • "Same here" = moi aussi. Ex: - I have so much work to do   - Same here dude!
  • "Sweet!" = sympa, cool. Ex: - I can do that for you - Sweet, thanks!
  • "Give me a break!"  = tu plaisantes !
  • "She’s the teacher’s pet" = c'est la chouchou du prof
  • "Get out of here!" = tu veux rire !
  • "to cut class" = sécher un cours
  • "Is that great or what?" = c'est génial non ?
  • My sister's boyfriend is a real "airhead". (= crétin)
  • I almost fell asleep during the test after an "all-nighter". = Nuit blanche
  • After working all day I am really "beat". (= crevé)
  • If you make another "boo-boo" like that, you won't have a job. (= erreur, bourde)
  • Do you know where the "can" is? = bathroom
  • He is a "couch potato" = lazy person (fainéant)
  • I need more time "to cram" for the test = bûcher pour un exam
  • This disco is really "dead" tonight (comme en français : c'est mort, pas d'ambiance)
  • Anna gave me an "earful" / "a lot of gossip" about our colleagues (raconter des ragots)
  • His older sister is a "fox" / is "foxy" = canon / sexy
  • I listened to the joke twice, but I still don't get it (= understand) = piger
  • Do you want rice or "spuds" for dinner? = patates
  • My father looks "square" in his jacket. = ringard
  • This food tastes “yucky” = dégoutante
